Town’s program balances the traditional and the innovative, emphasizing excellence in academics and a thorough exposure to the arts and physical education. We teach children to think creatively, read critically and reason logically, stressing the value of both individual learning and collaboration. We are committed to diversity, teaching students to be inclusive and to respect themselves and others.
Students leave Town as well-rounded, articulate, resilient and morally responsible individuals. They are prepared to meet the challenges of a demanding secondary education and continue on the path of lifelong learning.
At Town, we're building the right foundation. We believe the best school environment for children is an integrated co-ed N-8 model.
At Town, we value academic excellence. Our curriculum is informed by faculty expertise and current research and grounded in academic excellence and joyful learning.
At Town, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging are core values. We believe a diverse, inclusive, and equitable school community is critical for preparing students to participate in a complex, pluralistic, and interconnected society.
At Town, everything we do and everything we don't do makes a difference. Students work on projects that meet real and specific needs of the communities they learn about in school; and we give our students the tools they need to ensure a sustainable future.
At Town, we value our community partnerships. Students not only learn from these partnerships, but also put their knowledge to use for the greater good, using Town’s ethical motto of “Self, Others, and Surroundings” to guide their work.
At Town, we're moving forward and planning for the future. Our Long Range Plan defines and significantly deepens Town’s commitment to excellence, grounded in our mission and values, all in service of our students.

At Town, we believe that academic excellence depends not only on a diverse body of students, families, and faculty but, of equal importance, affirming and engaging the perspectives and backgrounds within our community. Our ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion work therefore aims for every child and adult to be heard. These efforts are at the heart of our mission.
As a thriving, inclusive school community for over 100 years, we are proud of our ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion. We also acknowledge our need to continue our learning, to strengthen this commitment and our practices, every day. This statement therefore reflects not only who we are but also who we seek to become as a diverse, inclusive, and equitable school community. Please join us in this essential, shared work.
~Douglas Brophy, Head of School
In support of diversity, inclusion, and equity at Town, all members of our community commit to:
Respect all
Trust each other to engage in difficult conversations
Share our unique stories and listen to others’
Learn from different perspectives and experiences
Examine our biases and endeavor to overcome them
Foster belonging, connectedness, and safety
Invest in the personal growth of children and adults alike
Guided by a commitment to Town’s ethical motto of Self, Others, and Surroundings, we seek to engage all community members around our multiple identities: among them race, age, gender identity and expression, ethnicity, family composition, ability/disability, learning styles, religion, sexuality, and socio-economic status. By engaging in this exploration of identity, culture, and systems that advantage some and disadvantage others, Town aspires for all members of our community – students, parents, caregivers, faculty, staff, alumni/ae, and Trustees – to develop a sense of belonging and for our graduates to bring about positive change in the world.

In the spring of 7th grade, families begin working with our High School Placement Director, learning about the mechanics of the high school application process. Families then devote time during the summer to explore high schools.
As the students enter their 8th grade year in the fall, they embark on visits and interviews to prospective schools, while benefiting from our weekly Decisions classes, where we offer support and guidance throughout the process. In addition, a series of parent meetings and regular, detailed communication from the Placement Director ensure that families remain well-informed and on the right path.
We embrace a collaborative approach involving the Placement Director, the Head of Upper School, the student support team, and teachers. The Head of School also actively participates by conducting mock interviews with students. Our aim is to establish a robust support system that not only provides comfort and security to students and their families, but also encourages thorough consideration of all available options.
Town partners closely with students and their families throughout the high school application process.
Our Director of High School Placement, Head of Upper School, and Upper School student support team all teach our 8th grade students regularly, which means that deep knowledge of each individual child informs reference letters, meetings with families, and conversations with high school admissions officers.
We are known for our integrity in advocating for our students with other schools. High school admissions officers know that our goal is to help students get to know schools and for the admissions teams to get to know our students. The information we share is based on real, lived experience with each student.
Our graduates enter high school with the confidence and self-knowledge that can only be achieved through a rigorous, well-designed placement process. Town alumni/ae go on to attend the best schools in New York City, including independent day schools, performing arts academies, and specialized public high schools, as well as boarding schools in the tri-state area and beyond.
